America’s favorite carpenter offers 10 energy saving and eco-friendly pointers that will keep your home Red, Hot and Green
1.Use Fluorescent Bulbs: They cost a bit more, but last 10 times longer, use two-thirds less energy, and give off less heat.
2. Look for the Energy Star Label: Home appliance products with the Energy Star Label cuts down on pollution. Also, refrigerators with this label use half as much energy compared to refrigerators made before 1993.
3. Get Unplugged: Many electronic products with a standby mode such as adapters and chargers use energy when plugged into the socket even if you’re not using them. Save on electricity by unplugging these items or by using a power strip so you can turn off multiple units.
4. Double-Up on Windows: Replace old single windows with double pane windows to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
5. Turn Down the Thermostat: Lower your thermostat by one degree and reduce costs by four percent. A ceiling fan used in conjunction with a heater in the summer or A/C in the winter helps with energy saving consumption.
6. Use Sustainable Floors: Cork and bamboo flooring are natural insulators.
7. Use Earth-Friendly Décor: When decorating your house, use recycled material. Use wood that has been harvested using sustainable methods. This will help preserve endangered rain forests.
8. Use Low-Flow Faucets: Reduce water consumption by 50 percent by using low flow water fixtures.
9. Buy Renewable Energy: Some local utility companies sell renewable energy such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power. They help reduce emissions and they can save you money.
10. Recycle: When redecorating make sure to recycle wood, metal, aluminum, glass, and paper items. Recycling half of your household waste can save up to 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
